Who writes Guide to Andalucía

Guide to Andalucía is written by Mikael Hansen and published by Plexo Group, which has worked in Andalucía since 2011 from an office in Mijas Costa, on the Málaga coast.

Living somewhere changes what you notice. It is the difference between knowing that Córdoba is hot in September and knowing that the first ten days are still 34 °C with the patios shut, while the last ten are one of the best travel windows of the year. Or that there is no bus to Alájar. Or that Feria week in Málaga is wonderful and a bad time to try to see anything else in the city.

Most of what is written in English about southern Spain comes from a week’s visit, or from nobody at all. This site is the other thing.

How the site is put together

Andalucía is eight provinces and they are not interchangeable. Almería is desert, Jaén is olive country and mountains, Cádiz faces the Atlantic and is windy when Málaga is not. So the structure follows the provinces rather than a list of famous sights.

• A hub for each of the eight provinces, with the airport, the months worth going, and how you get around once you land.
• A fiesta calendar that only shows what has not happened yet, and marks which dates are confirmed and which are still our best guess.
• A guide to each month, province by province, because the honest answer to "when should I go" changes depending on where you mean.
• Guides for people moving here rather than visiting, which is a different set of questions entirely.

What we do not do

Nothing on this site is a paid placement. No hotel, restaurant or tour operator has paid to appear, and none of the recommendations were bought. If that ever changes, it will say so on this page before it appears anywhere else.

We also do not pretend to have been everywhere. Where a recommendation rests on published information rather than a visit, the page says which. How we verify sets out where the numbers come from and where this site is still weak.

The property side, stated plainly

Plexo Group sells property in Andalucía through Plexo Properties and a handful of other sites. You should know that before you read a page about where it is nice to live.

It cuts both ways. It means we have a commercial interest in the region, and it also means the practical detail on this site comes from selling and servicing houses here since 2011, not from a research trip. Judge the pages on whether the detail holds up.
