October in Cádiz: the warmest sea in Andalucía, and bodegas without the harvest crowds

The Gulf of Cádiz holds 21.6°C all month, the vendimia is over, and the World Superbike finale takes every room in Jerez on 16–18 October.

Cádiz has the mildest October in Andalucía and the smallest difference between day and night — 23.4°C down to 17.3°C, a swing of just six degrees. The Atlantic holds the city steady. Drive forty minutes inland to Jerez and the same month gives you 25.5°C by day and 13.7°C at night, a swing of nearly twelve.

That contrast is the province in one line. The coast stays warm and even; the interior behaves like the rest of Andalucía and starts to feel properly autumnal. And in 2026 the biggest thing happening in either is a motorcycle race.

What the weather actually does

Cádiz city averages 23.4°C by day, 17.3°C at night, and 67mm of rain over 5.6 rain days in October. The station sits two metres above sea level on the seafront, which is why the diurnal range is so narrow — that is real, not a data quirk.

Jerez airport, inland, gives 25.5/13.7 and 72mm. Warmer afternoons, notably cooler nights. If you are choosing a base, that is the trade.

The rain needs the same caveat as everywhere in October: the monthly total is delivered in a handful of days rather than spread out, and a dry October here is more likely than a wet one. Cádiz province does get the Atlantic systems first, so it is marginally wetter than the east of the region.

The sea is the province’s advantage. The Gulf of Cádiz buoy averages 21.6°C through October and barely moves across the month — 21.9°C in the first ten days, 21.1°C in the last. That is the warmest water in Andalucía in October and warmer than the Costa del Sol by nearly two degrees. Through the Strait it is different: the Tarifa buoy sits at 18.6°C, because the Atlantic inflow keeps it cold year round.

Which week to book

The first week for the beach and the festival season, the third if you are coming for Jerez.

Two dates to be deliberate about. 7 October is the Virgen del Rosario and a local holiday in Cádiz city itself, Rota and several other towns — a good day to be there if you want the procession, a bad one if you wanted the shops open. And 16–18 October fills Jerez and El Puerto completely for the World Superbike finale.

What is on in October 2026

  • 25 September – 3 October (confirmed) — Alcances, the 58th Festival de Cine Documental de Cádiz. Spain’s longest-running documentary festival, in its record year with 447 entries, and for 2026 it adds open-air screenings in squares around the Pópulo and elsewhere in the old town. The free street screenings make it unusually easy to drop into for a night.
  • Wednesday 7 October (fixed every year) — Nuestra Señora del Rosario, patron of Cádiz. Venerated in the Convento de Santo Domingo, with a procession through the old town. It is one of the city’s two local holidays for 2026. Rota holds its patronal fiesta the same day, traditionally closing a week that runs from the 1st — though Rota’s 2026 programme could not be confirmed from the ayuntamiento.
  • Monday 12 October (fixed every year) — Fiesta Nacional de España.
  • 16–18 October (confirmed) — WorldSBK, Pirelli Spanish Round, Circuito de Jerez. The final round of the World Superbike season. This is the largest ticketed event in the province all month and it takes every room in Jerez and El Puerto de Santa María with it.
  • Sunday 18 October (fixed every year) — Día del Patrón San Lucas, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, with the public holiday moved to Monday the 19th in 2026. A quiet patronal day rather than a feria; Sanlúcar saves its scale for the May manzanilla feria and the August beach races.
  • Through the month (confirmed) — the Gran Teatro Falla’s October programme opens with Miguel Ríos on the 1st, theatre on the 3rd, Pasión Vega on the 6th and a symphonic night on the 10th, all at 20:00. San Martín del Tesorillo takes its fiesta on 2 October and Zahara de la Sierra on the 28th.

What is not on, despite what you will read: the Jerez vendimia is finished before October starts — the harvest festival runs late August through September and by October the grapes are in and fermenting. International Sherry Week is November, 2–8 November 2026. And Jerez takes no October local holiday at all; its two are in May and September.

What life is like

Cádiz is a working city that happens to have beaches, and October is when the balance tips back. La Caleta and the Playa de la Victoria still get used on warm afternoons but the city is not performing for anyone. The old town’s bars fill with people who live there.

In the sherry towns the mood is different again. October is cellar season: the new wine is through its fermentation and settling before classification, the bodegas are busy but not harvesting, and tours run without the summer queues. You will not see grapes being pressed. You will see a working bodega in its quietest, most atmospheric month, and you will be one of few people on the tour.

The pueblos blancos inland — Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil, Arcos — are at their best. Summer makes them hot and crowded; October makes them walkable, and the Sierra de Grazalema is the wettest place in Spain, so the greenery returns as soon as the autumn rain does.

The one thing to do in October

Take a bodega tour in Jerez, El Puerto or Sanlúcar in the second half of the month. The vendimia crowds have gone, the new wine is in the butts, and the criaderas y solera system is easier to understand when a cellar master has time to explain it to four people instead of forty.

It is the opposite of the advice for September, when the draw was watching the harvest. October gives you the quiet version, and for anyone actually interested in sherry rather than the spectacle of picking, the quiet version is better. Pair it with the Falla programme or a day on a Costa de la Luz beach at 21.6°C and the month makes itself.
