October is my favourite month to visit Andalucia. I say this without hesitation: if you have flexibility on when to go, choose October, specifically mid-October. The summer crowds have evaporated. The temperatures are perfect for walking — warm, not fierce. Hotel prices drop 30–40% from peak. The Alhambra becomes bookable within a few weeks rather than months. The countryside turns golden.

October weather in Andalucia
October marks the transition from summer to autumn — and in Andalucia, that transition is beautiful.
Temperatures:
– Seville and Córdoba: daytime 22–28°C, evenings 14–17°C. Warm enough for shirt sleeves at noon, a light jacket needed after dark.
– Granada: 19–24°C days, 9–12°C evenings. Cooler than the lowlands — bring a proper layer.
– Málaga and the coast: 22–26°C, warm sea (20–22°C at the start of October, cooling to 19°C by month end).
– The mountains (Grazalema, Ronda): noticeably cooler — 15–20°C days, 8–10°C evenings.
Rain: October sees the first autumn rain in Andalucia, but it’s concentrated in the western provinces (Cádiz, Huelva, Seville) and typically arrives as short, heavy bursts rather than prolonged grey drizzle. The eastern provinces (Almería, Granada) remain very dry. Statistically, October has around 5–7 rainy days in Seville — and the sun usually returns the same day.
Sea temperature: Costa del Sol and Almería coast at 20–22°C in early October — warm enough for swimming, particularly in the first two weeks.
Why October beats every other season
The Alhambra is bookable
In April or May, Nasrid Palaces tickets sell out 2–4 months ahead. In October, you can often book 3–4 weeks ahead. Last-minute travellers who couldn’t get Alhambra tickets in spring will find October their window. The experience inside is unchanged; the queues are shorter.
The crowds disappear
The summer tourist peak ends sharply with European school terms resuming in September. By the first week of October, Seville’s Barrio Santa Cruz is walkable without shuffling. The Mezquita in Córdoba has elbow room. The white villages are quiet enough to feel genuinely authentic rather than stage-managed.
The light
October light in Andalucia is extraordinary — lower in the sky, golden and long, painting the white villages and olive groves in a warm glow that the harsh summer sun can’t match. Photographers and painters have known this for decades.
The prices
Mid-range hotels that cost €150/night in April cost €90–€110 in October. Flights are dramatically cheaper than summer. Car hire is 30–40% below peak. The tapa libre system in Granada means your food budget doesn’t increase at all.
What’s on in October
Olive harvest (Jaén province, late October)
The world’s largest olive oil-producing region begins its vendimia (harvest) in late October. Jaén province — north of Granada — turns into a working olive landscape, with the harvest dominating every conversation and kitchen. Visiting the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla (the largest protected area in Spain) in October is extraordinary: autumn colours, the olive harvest, and almost no tourists.
Día de la Hispanidad (12 October, national holiday)
Spain’s national day. Some cities have parades; most have a relaxed public holiday atmosphere. Book restaurants ahead on this date.
Feria de Fuengirola (Costa del Sol, mid-October)
The largest autumn feria on the Costa del Sol — a week of music, flamenco, casetas, and a funfair along the seafront. More local than international in character.
What to do in October
Cities
All the main sights operate on normal schedules. October is ideal for:
– Seville: Alcázar, Cathedral, Triana tapas — no significant queuing. The city’s rooftop bars are still running (they close in November).
– Córdoba: The Mezquita at 8.30am, now with breathing room. The Judería gardens hold their late-season colour. Medina Azahara is at its least crowded.
– Granada: The Alhambra in October light. The Albaicín without the summer crowds. Sierra Nevada visible clearly dusted with the first snow of the season on the highest peaks.
White villages
October is the best month for the white village circuit. The landscape turns amber and gold, the light is warm, and you’ll have Setenil, Grazalema, and Zahara largely to yourself. The mountain roads are clear and the temperature for driving with the windows down is perfect.
Hiking
October is peak hiking season in the Andalusian natural parks. The Sierra de Cazorla, Grazalema Natural Park, and Sierra Nevada (below the snow line) are all outstanding in October. The Garganta Verde (Grazalema) and Caminito del Rey (Málaga) have comfortable temperatures and thin crowds.
Coast
The Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical beaches are swimmable in early October. By mid-month the sea cools and beach use drops, but the coastal towns (Nerja, Almuñécar, Marbella) are pleasant for walking without summer crowds.

- Sunscreen (the October sun is still strong at midday)

October is the sweet spot. The only things April has that October doesn’t are wildflowers (spring blooms) and the Feria de Abril. If those aren’t your priority — and they don’t need to be — October is the objectively better choice for most types of traveller.
