October in Córdoba: the steepest cool-down in Andalucía, and San Rafael on the 24th

Córdoba drops nearly five degrees between the start of October and the end. The Mezquita becomes comfortable, and the city takes a Saturday holiday for its patron archangel.

Córdoba cools faster in October than any other Andalusian capital. The first five days average 28.5°C; the last five average 23.6°C. Nights fall from 14.7°C to 11.3°C over the same stretch. The city that is unbearable in July becomes, by the third week of October, close to ideal.

It is also the wettest of the eight capitals in October, at 86mm — though as everywhere in Andalucía, that total arrives in a few days rather than across the month. And on 24 October the city takes a holiday for its patron archangel, which in 2026 falls on a Saturday.

What the weather actually does

Córdoba airport averages 25.1°C by day and 13.0°C at night across October, with 86mm of rain over 6.9 rain days.

Split the month and the picture changes completely. The first ten days run 27.7/14.0 and deliver about three days above 30°C. The last eleven run 23.7/11.6 and deliver roughly none. That 4.9-degree drop in daytime maximum is the steepest in the region, and almost all of it happens before the 20th.

On rain, the 86mm deserves a caveat in both directions. Across thirty years the median October is drier than the mean, roughly 80% of the month’s rain lands on its three wettest days, and October 1985 recorded nothing at all here. A dry fortnight is the likeliest outcome; a spectacular single day is the risk.

Then the light goes early. Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October and sunset moves back an hour overnight. Córdoba’s patios and riverside walk are afternoon activities from that date, not evening ones.

Which week to book

The last ten days, and preferably the weekend of 24 October.

By then the heat has gone, the Mezquita is comfortable to spend two hours in, and San Rafael gives you the city at its most itself. The trade is daylight: after the 25th you are eating dinner in the dark.

Avoid 10–12 October if crowds bother you. The Fiesta Nacional falls on a Monday in 2026 and Córdoba is an easy weekend from Seville and Madrid alike.

What is on in October 2026

  • 25 September – 3 October (confirmed) — Cosmopoética, 23rd edition. Córdoba’s international poetry festival, this year with 73 authors and Borges at its centre, across strands including Las noches del laberinto, its music-and-poetry nights. Much of it is free to capacity, and the first three days fall in October — a genuine October event that most listings file under September and then drop.
  • Saturday 24 October (fixed every year) — Fiesta de San Rafael, Custodio de Córdoba, and a full local public holiday. The city venerates the Archangel Raphael as its guardian after the plague-era Juramento, and the day centres on the Basílica del Juramento and the Triunfos, the votive columns topped with the archangel that stand around the city — the grandest of them beside the Puente Romano. Because it lands on a Saturday in 2026 and costs nobody a working day, expect the whole province to turn out. The detailed 2026 programme had not been published when this was written.
  • Monday 12 October (fixed every year) — Fiesta Nacional de España.
  • 7 October (confirmed) — Virgen del Rosario fiestas in Fuente-Tójar, La Guijarrosa, Luque, Montoro, Moriles, Nueva Carteya and Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo.
  • 2 and 5 October (confirmed) — Almodóvar del Río takes two separate October holidays, which means a substantial multi-day fiesta beneath one of the best-preserved castles in Andalucía. Cañete de las Torres and Fuente Carreteros are also on the 2nd.
  • From late October — the olive harvest opens across the province. Córdoba’s most recent forecast is over 1.5 million tonnes of olives, and Baena and Priego de Córdoba are the DOP country to see it in.

One firm correction. The Montilla-Moriles vendimia is long over by October — it began on 23 July in 2026, the earliest harvest in Spain, and the asoleo, the sun-drying of Pedro Ximénez grapes on esparto mats, needs August and September heat. If you arrive in October expecting grapes on the mats, you will not find them. You will find wineries in full fermentation, and they are worth the trip on their own terms.

What life is like

Córdoba in summer is a city organised around avoiding the sun. In October that organising principle dissolves and the place relaxes. The Judería is walkable at midday, the terraces along the river fill in the afternoon, and the patios — the famous ones, which peak in May — are still green and worth seeking out even outside festival season.

Out in the province, October is when the year’s real work starts. The mills open for the olive campaign in the second half of the month, and in the Subbética the landscape changes character as the harvest machinery appears under the trees. Montilla and Moriles are busy with fermentation rather than picking.

San Rafael dominates the back end of the month socially. It is not a feria with casetas and a fairground; it is a city holiday with processions, a great deal of eating, and a genuine sense that Córdoba is doing something for itself rather than for visitors.

The Mezquita in October

This is the month to give it the time it deserves. In summer you are moving through the forest of arches with several hundred other people and a clock running on your own endurance. In October the building is comfortable and quieter.

Use the free access slot: Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 09:30, excluding special celebration days. It is officially published, it is genuinely free, and at that hour the Mezquita is close to empty. Opening hours can change without much notice, so check the official booking tool for your specific date rather than trusting a printed timetable.

The one thing to do in October

Be in Córdoba on Saturday 24 October for San Rafael. There is no ticket, no programme you need to have studied, and no tourist infrastructure built around it — it is simply the day the city honours its guardian, and it has done so since the seventeenth century.

Walk between the Triunfos, end at the one by the Puente Romano, and eat wherever is full. Falling on a Saturday makes 2026 a bigger year for it than most. If you can only pick one date in Córdoba this autumn, pick this one.

Is October still hot in Córdoba?

Early October, yes — the first ten days average nearly 28°C and deliver about three days above 30°C. From the third week it settles into the low-to-mid twenties, which is the most comfortable the city gets outside spring.

Can I see the Pedro Ximénez grapes drying in the sun?

Not in October. The Montilla-Moriles harvest starts in July and the asoleo happens in the peak heat of August and September. October is cellar season, not harvest season.

Is 24 October worth planning a trip around?

If you want Córdoba as Córdoba rather than as a monument, yes. Note that it is a full local holiday, so museums and shops may run reduced hours — plan the Mezquita for a different day.
