October in Huelva: the montanera opens and the Doñana birds arrive

From 1 October the ibérico pigs go out into the dehesa and the first wintering birds reach Doñana — two officially datable October seasons that almost no guide covers.

Huelva’s October has a start date written into Spanish law. From 1 October the Iberian pigs go out into the dehesa to fatten on acorns — the montanera — and the national quality standard for ibérico fixes that window at 1 October to 15 December. It is the month the ham that Jabugo is famous for actually begins.

At the other end of the province, the same weeks bring the first wintering birds into Doñana. Two seasonal events, both officially datable, both largely untold — which is fitting for a province most visitors drive past on the way to Seville.

What the weather actually does

Huelva averages 24.9°C by day and 14.1°C at night in October, with 68mm of rain over 6.4 rain days. (The station’s series runs 1984–2010 rather than the full thirty years, which is worth knowing but does not change the picture.)

That is a mild, pleasant month on the coast and a comfortable one inland. The Sierra de Aracena, up at 600 metres and more, runs cooler and gets more of the Atlantic weather — bring a layer for the north of the province that you will not need on the Costa de la Luz.

The rain caveat applies here as everywhere: the 68mm is delivered in a handful of days, and a dry October is at least as likely as a wet one. Huelva does sit where the Atlantic systems arrive first, so when weather comes, it comes here early.

The sea holds up well. There is no dedicated Huelva buoy, but the Gulf of Cádiz buoy offshore averages 21.6°C through October, and this stretch of the Costa de la Luz shares that water. Nearshore conditions can differ, but the broad answer is that the Atlantic here stays swimmable through the month.

Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, taking an hour off the end of the day overnight.

Which week to book

Any of them, honestly — this is a province without an October rush. If you want the dehesa at its most active, come after the first week, once the pigs have been out a while. If you want Doñana, later is better: the wintering flocks build through the autumn.

7 October is the Virgen del Rosario and a local holiday in Isla Cristina and Minas de Riotinto among others. 12 October is the Fiesta Nacional and a Monday, so the long weekend will fill the coastal resorts that are still open.

What is on in October 2026

  • From 1 October (fixed every year) — the montanera opens. Spain’s ibérico quality standard requires acorn-fed pigs to enter the dehesa between 1 October and 15 December, with slaughter from 15 December. From the first of the month the black pigs are loose under the holm oaks and cork oaks around Jabugo, Cortegana, Aracena and Corteconcepción. You cannot see this in summer.
  • October onwards (confirmed) — the wintering birds arrive in Doñana. The national park’s own material puts the wintering waterbird season from October to February, with the greylag goose the headline arrival and concentrations reaching around 200,000 across a season. The autumn rains revive the marshes just as northern Europe freezes.
  • 1–2 October (confirmed) — Cartaya takes a full two-day municipal fiesta, the earliest in the province.
  • 7 October (confirmed) — Virgen del Rosario in Isla Cristina and Minas de Riotinto. Isla Cristina is the pick: a working fishing port doing its patronal fiesta well out of season.
  • Monday 12 October (fixed every year) — Fiesta Nacional de España.
  • 13, 19 and 22 October (confirmed) — Cumbres de Enmedio on the 13th, Gibraleón on the 19th, Bonares on the 22nd.

Now the corrections, and there are several, because Huelva is badly served by autumn listings. The Fiestas Colombinas are in August, not October — they mark Columbus’s departure from Palos on 3 August. The chestnut festivals in the Sierra de Aracena are December, not October: Fuenteheridos holds its Fiesta de la Castaña over the Inmaculada bridge in early December, and the Los Marines Fiesta del Mosto is December too. None of the chestnut villages takes an October holiday at all. The Festival de Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva is November, 13–21 November 2026. And the Romería del Rocío is at Pentecost in May or June — it has no autumn edition, whatever you may read.

The Jornadas Micológicas in Aracena do fall in mid-autumn, but the town’s official sites could not be reached to confirm 2026 dates. Treat it as expected rather than confirmed, and ring the Aracena tourist office if you want to build a trip around it.

What life is like

Huelva is the least touristed province in Andalucía and October is its quietest good month. The coastal resorts — Punta Umbría, Isla Cristina, Matalascañas — empty out and become places where you can park. The water is still warm. The beaches are enormous and, in October, close to empty.

Inland the Sierra de Aracena is in its best season. The chestnut woods colour through October, the mushrooms come up after the first rain, and the walking between the white villages — Alájar, Linares de la Sierra, Almonaster la Real, Castaño del Robledo — is as good as anywhere in the region and considerably less known. The festivals arrive in December, but the woods are here now.

And the dehesa works. This is a landscape that looks like parkland and is in fact an agricultural system a thousand years old, and October is the month it does the thing it exists to do.

The one thing to do in October

Walk in the dehesa around Jabugo while the montanera is on. From 1 October the pigs are out among the oaks, and the ham you have eaten in every bar in Spain suddenly has a landscape attached to it.

Several producers around Jabugo, Corteconcepción and Cortegana run visits; the walking routes between the Sierra de Aracena villages cross the dehesa for free. Do it in October, November or early December and you see it working. Do it in July and you see empty fields with some very fine trees in them.

Common questions

Is October a good time for Doñana?

It is the start of the best stretch. The national park puts the wintering waterbird season at October to February, and numbers build as the autumn goes on — so late October is better than early, and November and December better still.

Can I still go to the beach in Huelva in October?

Yes. Air temperatures reach 24.9°C on average and the offshore Atlantic sits around 21.6°C. The resorts are quiet, which is the main reason to come.

Is there a chestnut festival in the Sierra de Aracena in October?

No — the festivals are in December, tied to the Inmaculada bridge. October gives you the chestnut woods in autumn colour and the mushroom season, which is arguably the better half of the deal.
