October in Málaga: three ferias, the copper forest, and the day the clocks take your evening

Three ferias in two weeks, the Genal chestnut woods turning copper, and a sea at 19.8°C — plus the 25 October clock change that ends the Costa del Sol’s long evenings.

October is the month Málaga province stops pretending it is still summer, and it does it on a specific day. Until the 24th the coast runs at 24°C by day and the sun is still up at half past seven. On Sunday 25 October the clocks go back, sunset drops from 19:30 to 18:29 overnight, and the paseo empties an hour earlier for the rest of the year.

Everything else about the month is generous. The ferias keep coming — Vélez-Málaga into the 4th, Fuengirola across the long weekend, Nerja after that. Inland, the chestnut woods of the Genal begin turning the colour that gives them their name. And the water is still swimmable, if not quite the bathwater of September.

What the weather actually does

Málaga airport averages 24.1°C by day and 15.0°C at night in October, with 57mm of rain across 4.4 rain days. That rainfall figure is nearly triple September’s 20mm, and it is the single biggest change in the month.

It is also the most misleading number on this page. October rain in Andalucía does not arrive as drizzle spread across the month. Across the thirty-year record, roughly 80% of October’s rainfall falls on the three wettest days, and about a third of Octobers are close to dry. You are not booking a wet month. You are booking a mostly dry month with a real chance of one or two dramatic days, and October is peak season for a gota fría — the cold upper air that meets a still-warm Mediterranean and empties itself in a few hours. The hazard is flash flooding in dry riverbeds, not a ruined week. Check AEMET before mountain driving, and never park in a rambla.

The sea is the part most guides get wrong. The Puertos del Estado buoy off Málaga averages 19.8°C through October — warmer at the start, near 20.7°C, and down to about 18.8°C by the end. That is swimmable, and it is several degrees below the 21–22°C the brochures claim for the Costa del Sol in autumn. Levante-driven upwelling along this stretch of coast keeps Málaga cooler than Cabo de Gata, two provinces east.

Inland is a different proposition again. Ronda at 740 metres and the Genal villages run several degrees cooler by day and drop properly at night. Pack a jacket for the white towns even when the coast is in shirtsleeves.

Which week to book

The first two weeks, if the beach matters. Water temperature and daylight are both on your side, and the province is still running ferias.

The exception is 10–12 October. Monday 12 October is the Fiesta Nacional, and in 2026 it falls on a Monday, so the whole country takes a three-day weekend. It lands on top of the Fuengirola feria. That corner of the coast will be at its fullest and its most expensive all autumn, and it is the one weekend where booking late will cost you.

For the Genal colour, go the other way: the last week of October and into November is when the chestnut woods actually turn. Early in the month you will find green with gold coming through, not full copper.

What is on in October 2026

  • 29 September – 4 October (confirmed) — Real Feria de San Miguel, Vélez-Málaga. Runs into the first weekend of October, so it is catchable if you arrive early in the month.
  • 1–4 October (confirmed) — San Diego Comic-Con Málaga, at FYCMA in the city. The official European edition, and the largest single event in Málaga city this month. It will tighten hotel availability across that first weekend.
  • 6–12 October (fixed every year) — Feria del Rosario, Fuengirola. Fuengirola’s own patronal feria: casetas on the recinto ferial, a day feria in the centre, funfair, horses and flamenco. 7 October is the town’s official local holiday.
  • 8–13 October (expected) — Feria de Nerja. The 2026 programme was not published when this was written; the dates follow the town’s usual pattern.
  • Monday 12 October (fixed every year) — Fiesta Nacional de España. Public offices and most shops shut. Book restaurants.
  • 7 October (confirmed) — Virgen del Rosario is the local holiday in fourteen Málaga villages at once, including Algatocín, Alpandeire, Cartajima, Parauta, Benaoján, Yunquera and Canillas de Albaida. Several of those are Genal chestnut villages, which makes the 7th an unusually good day to combine a village fiesta with the start of the autumn colour.

Two things you will see listed for October that are not. Fuengirola’s Feria Internacional de los Países — the big international one — is a spring event, 29 April to 3 May in 2026, not the October feria that shares the town. And the chestnut festivals are November: Pujerra’s Fiesta de la Castaña falls around All Saints, and the Cortes de la Frontera mushroom days are November too. October gives you the woods, not the festivals.

What life is like

The coast changes hands in October. The Spanish holidaymakers went home in September and the northern European winterers have not properly arrived, so for a few weeks the promenades belong to the people who live on them. Chiringuitos stay open but stop being frantic. You can get a table at eight.

Inland, October is a working month. The oil-olive picking starts from late October into November across the province, and the table-olive verdeo finished back in September — so if you want to see olives being harvested, come at the very end of the month, not the beginning.

The clock change on 25 October is worth planning around rather than being surprised by. Before it, you can still walk a white village in usable light after six. After it, dusk in Ronda is a mid-afternoon event and the evening moves indoors.

Coast or inland

In August this question answers itself — the coast is 6 or 7 degrees cooler than the interior and that is that. In October the gap narrows and inland becomes the better half of the province. Ronda, Antequera, the Genal and the Guadalhorce are all more comfortable in October than at any point since April, and the Caminito del Rey is walkable without the heat that makes it a chore in summer.

The drive is under two hours from the coast to almost anywhere worth going. If you have a week, splitting it — four days on the water while it is still warm, three inland once the colour starts — gets more out of October than staying put.

The one thing to do in October

Drive the Valle del Genal in the last week of the month. Between Alpandeire, Cartajima, Parauta, Igualeja, Júzcar, Faraján, Jubrique, Genalguacil, Benalauría and Pujerra the chestnut woods turn from green through gold to the deep rust that gives the valley its name, the bosque de cobre.

It is a genuinely seasonal thing — there is no version of it in June — and the roads are empty, because the coach tours go to Ronda and turn around. Start in Ronda, drop south into the valley, and give it a full day rather than an afternoon. Turismo Costa del Sol puts the colour across October and November, with the better half of that window being the later one.

Common questions

Can you still swim in Málaga in October?

Yes, though it depends how hardy you are. The sea runs about 20.7°C in the first ten days and 18.8°C by the last, against air temperatures in the mid-twenties. Early October is comfortable swimming for most people; the last week is a brisk dip.

Is October too wet for a beach holiday?

No. 57mm across 4.4 rain days sounds worse than it is, because most of it falls on very few days. The realistic risk is losing one or two days of a fortnight, not the fortnight.

Is the Fuengirola feria worth planning around?

If you want a Spanish feria without the scale of Málaga’s August one, yes — it is much more local in feel. But it collides with the 12 October long weekend, so book rooms well ahead or stay a few towns along the coast.
