October in Seville: the month the city becomes walkable again

Seville loses 4.3°C of daytime heat between the first week of October and the last. Here is which week to book, and why 18 October is the day to be in Dos Hermanas.

Seville in October is two cities. In the first week it is still the Seville of late summer — 28°C by day, three days in ten touching 30°C, the Bienal de Flamenco playing out its closing nights. By the last week it is 24.6°C, dark before half past six, and the opera season has started at the Maestranza.

The city loses 4.3 degrees of daytime heat between the first five days of the month and the last, and almost all of that cooling happens in the first three weeks. If you have been putting off Seville because of the heat, the back half of October is when it becomes a walking city again.

What the weather actually does

Seville airport averages 26.0°C by day and 14.4°C at night across October, with 68mm of rain over 6.1 rain days. The monthly average hides the shape of it. Broken into thirds: 28.0/15.7 for the first ten days, 25.5/14.5 for the middle, 24.6/13.3 for the last eleven.

The clearest way to put it is in 30-degree days. Seville averages 3.3 of them in the first ten days of October and 0.5 in the last eleven. Early October can still be genuinely hot at two in the afternoon. Late October cannot.

On the rain, treat the 68mm with suspicion in both directions. Roughly 80% of October’s rainfall arrives on the three wettest days of the month, and in the thirty-year record nine Octobers came in under 20mm while October 1999 delivered 245mm. October 1985 recorded nothing at all. You are more likely to get a dry fortnight than a wet one — but if it rains, it will rain properly.

And then the light goes. The sun sets over Seville at 20:07 on 1 October and 19:35 on the 24th — a gentle loss of half an hour. Then the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October and sunset drops to 18:34 overnight. From that day it is dark in Seville before quarter to seven, which changes what an evening in the city feels like more than any temperature on this page.

Which week to book

The third week. By around the 15th the afternoon heat has gone, the evenings are still long enough to be useful, and the 12 October long weekend has cleared out.

Avoid 10–12 October unless you want the crowd. Monday 12 October is the Fiesta Nacional and falls on a Monday in 2026, making a three-day weekend that fills Seville with Spanish visitors. The last week is cheaper and quieter but you are eating dinner in the dark.

One practical advantage runs through the whole month: this is when the Alhambra, the Alcázar and the cathedral become bookable at short notice again. Seville in October does not need the planning horizon that Seville in April does.

What is on in October 2026

  • 1–3 October (confirmed) — the closing days of the XXIV Bienal de Flamenco. The festival ran from 9 September and finishes on the 3rd, so October gets three nights of it — but they are the closing-gala nights and the hardest tickets of the whole run. Anyone selling you “the Bienal in October” is selling three days.
  • Sunday 18 October (confirmed) — Romería de Valme, Dos Hermanas. Hundreds of decorated ox-carts and thousands of riders take the Virgen de Valme out to the Cortijo de Cuarto and back. It is declared of National Tourist Interest, it is the largest romería in the province, and it is comfortably the biggest single October event in Seville province. The council has fixed Monday 19 October as a local holiday “the day after the Romería de Valme”, which is what pins the date.
  • Monday 12 October (fixed every year) — Fiesta Nacional de España.
  • 5 October (confirmed) — the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla opens at the Teatro de la Maestranza.
  • 23, 27 and 31 October, 20:00 (confirmed) — Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Maestranza, the season’s first main-stage opera. The 25th brings the Certamen de Nuevas Voces for World Opera Day, and the 29th and 30th the symphony orchestra’s “Neoclásicas” programme.
  • Village fiestas (confirmed) — Burguillos and Santiponce on 2 October; Almensilla and Carrión de los Céspedes on the 5th; El Cuervo, Gilena, Lantejuela, Martín de la Jara, El Saucejo and Villanueva de San Juan on the 7th for the Virgen del Rosario; Brenes, El Garrobo and Valencina de la Concepción on the 9th; Bollullos de la Mitación on the 26th.

Three things to cross off your list. There is no major October feria in Seville province — Écija’s Real Feria was 15–20 September and Carmona’s fiestas are May and September. The Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla is November, 6–14 November 2026, not October. And the province’s vendimia festival is a late-summer event, not an autumn one.

What life is like

The rhythm shifts. Through summer Seville lives at night because the day is unusable; in October the day comes back. Mornings in Santa Cruz are pleasant rather than an endurance test, and the Alcázar gardens in low autumn light are the best version of themselves.

What you lose is the late evening. Until the 24th you can still sit outside at nine. After the clock change the terraces thin out fast, the city pulls indoors, and the season of small bars and long dinners begins. Neither is worse. They are different holidays, three weeks apart.

The cultural calendar follows the same arc. The Bienal ends on the 3rd and for a fortnight the city is quiet; then from around the 20th the Maestranza, the theatres and the flamenco peñas all restart. If you want Seville with something on every night, come in the last ten days.

The one thing to do in October

Go to the Romería de Valme on Sunday 18 October. Dos Hermanas is fifteen minutes from Seville and this is a thirteenth-century pilgrimage that almost no foreign visitor attends — the ox-carts, the riders, the whole town walking its Virgin out to the countryside and back.

It is the one day of the year it happens, it requires no ticket, and it is the sort of thing people come to Andalucía hoping to see and then miss because it was not in the guidebook. If you are in Seville that weekend, this is the day to give up.

Common questions

Is October too hot for Seville?

Not for most of it. The first week still reaches 30°C on about a third of days, so if heat is your concern, come after the 10th. From mid-month the afternoons are in the mid-twenties and the city is comfortable to walk.

Early or late October in Seville?

Early if you want long evenings and are happy with heat; late if you want cool sightseeing weather and lower prices, and do not mind dark by half past six after the 25th. The middle of the month is the compromise and it is a good one.

Do I still need to book the Alcázar weeks ahead?

Far less than in spring. October is one of the easiest months of the year for short-notice tickets to Seville’s big sites, though the 12 October long weekend is an exception.
